Careers and Training

Training

PANZ is committed to maintaining and encouraging a high standard of professionalism within our industry. PANZ is involved in a range of initiatives to help new people enter the publishing industry and to ensure that existing personnel enjoy ongoing professional development opportunities.

PANZ Training Programme

PANZ has restructured the CLNZ funded training programme to make publisher training more targeted, and to achieve maximum impact for members. The programme now consists of three parts: the Mentoring Programme, aimed at business owners and top management: the International Career Development Fund, aimed at senior and middle staff: and the Workshop Programme aimed at all members of PANZ, especially beginner and intermediate levels.  The annual PANZ conference will further support the programme. Every second conference will be more workshop/hands on, to support beginner, intermediate and middle staff learning.

Mentoring Programme

The mentoring programme is intended to help individual members become better publishers and business owners; and to share the knowledge of the many experienced members with others in a structured environment.

Who is it for?

The programme is aimed at business owners and heads of publishing houses in trade and educational publishing who may be:

  • without access to on-job development, or
  • lacking skill in a particular area such as financial, business strategy, publishing list development, or
  • in growth mode and/or about to undertake big change, or need to make change but are unsure what the change should be

The mentorship is intended as an active programme with measurable outputs. PANZ will provide a simple structure and guidelines for the mentor and the protégé.

How the mentors are selected

PANZ has a list of approved potential mentors with a variety of expertise in different fields and will aim to match the mentor and protégé. The applicant is welcome to suggest their own mentor but acceptance will be at PANZ discretion.

STRUCTURE

We suggest the mentor and protégé each sign up for six months, after an initial meeting to establish whether the mentor and protégé are the right fit. This meeting would typically include a series of questions, and a SWOT analysis and identification of goals for the mentorship.

The protégé will enter into a contract with PANZ and the mentor.

At the end of the period the mentor and protégé will complete feedback on what worked and what didn’t work.

A neutral mentoring overseer will be appointed to turn to in case the mentor-protégé relationship is not working, with a subsequent simple process to follow.

CRITERIA

All applicants will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently a member of PANZ
  • Be a head of a publishing house or a business owner

Application process:

  • Applicants need to demonstrate in their application the significance a successful mentorship will have to their business or career
  • Applicants will be asked to report directly to PANZ on the result of the mentorship
  • Applicants will be selected twice-annually by an independent committee established by PANZ council
  • Applications must be made using the relevant form
  • The mentorship will be free of cost for the protégé
  • Funding will be awarded to the mentor at the discretion of the committee and correspondence will not be entered into

Awarding of funding:

  • On completion of the programme, mentors and protégés will be required to submit feedback to PANZ on the form provided
  • Mentors will be awarded funds on completion of the feedback form
  • No payment will be made for the initial meeting

Applications

Applications for the mentoring programme fund will be called twice yearly (15 July and 28 February). Download an application form here.

The Career Development Fund

The Career Development Fund is aimed at senior and mid-level publishing staff, to fund participation in an international course, fellowship or internship. The fund will be used to further big ambitions and career changing initiatives: much of the benefit of the programme will be in the long term relationships developed with other professionals working in the same area.

Up to three applications will be funded per year, each eligible for a maximum of $3000 funding.

CRITERIA

All applicants will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently employed by a member of PANZ
  • Be able to demonstrate the support of their employer in their application
  • Have been involved in the New Zealand publishing industry for at least 12 months

Funding is available for, but not limited to:

  • Attendance at relevant international courses such as the Oxford Brookes Publishing Course, the Yale Publishing Course
  • International internships researched and initiated by the applicant such as the Curtis Brown internship
  • Courses and fellowships such as Book Fair Fellowships

Application process:

  • Applicants need to demonstrate in their application the significance a successful application will have to their career
  • Applicants should include letters of support from three members of the industry
  • Applicants will be required to report in writing directly to PANZ within six weeks of the conclusion of their course/fellowship/internship/return to NZ using the form provided, and to give a public presentation to PANZ members when opportunity arises (such as conference)
  • Applicants will be asked to keep a travel diary or blog during the time they are away
  • Funding will be awarded twice-annually by an independent committee established by PANZ council
  • Applications must be made using the relevant form
  • Funding awards will be for a maximum of $3,000 and will be matched dollar for dollar by the member’s own organisation. The applicant therefore needs the approval and support of his or her own organisation
  • Funding will be awarded at the discretion of the committee and correspondence will not be entered into

Awarding of funding:

PANZ will award funding on confirmation of course/fellowship/internship booking and receipt of an invoice

Applicants unable to attend their designated course/fellowship/internship must inform PANZ as soon as possible and will be required to reapply in a subsequent round if they wish to attend at a later date and any funding must be repaid in full to PANZ

Applications for the International Career Development fund will be called twice yearly (15 July and 28 February).

Training Workshops

The result of the PANZ survey clearly showed that members prioritise chances for networking with other publishers and courses in:

  • Digital publishing
  • Digital marketing
  • Rights
  • Contracts

The training workshops are intended to differentiate between beginner and intermediate courses, with overseas presenters brought in where possible and desirable.
