Te Papa Press is the publishing imprint of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Founded in 1997, Te Papa Press publishes a wide range of catalogues, museum books and scholarly research titles based on collections and exhibitions, as well as richly illustrated contemporary and historical art books and award-winning popular books that represent New Zealand’s unique national identity. Te Papa Press books are beautiful objects, valuable reference tools and engaging narratives of New Zealand.

Steele Roberts Publishing is a small, independent company focusing on quality literature and non-fiction. Its list includes art, business, Māori, self-help, current affairs and children’s books. Steele Roberts has been publishing since 1996.

Rawlinsons Media Ltd is a niche publisher for the construction industry and a subsidiary of Rawlinsons Ltd, a New Zealand-wide firm of quantity surveyors. The company’s main title, Rawlinsons New Zealand Construction Handbook, has been published annually since 1986 and contains current building cost information and associated industry data. In 2003 two further titles were published, both dealing with the Construction Contracts Act (2003).

A division of Pearson, Penguin Group (NZ) produces about 80–100 new books a year under the Penguin, Viking, Raupo and Puffin imprints. These cover a very wide subject range, from literary fiction, history and biography to lifestyle, cookery and children’s books.

Pearson is the local subsidiary of Pearson Education, the largest educa­tional publisher in the world. Pearson publishes 100–120 new titles each year, all designed for the New Zealand and export educational markets. Pearson is also active in publishing in te reo Māori. Pearson Education is the agent for WW Norton.

Otago University Press publishes about twenty scholarly works and books for general readers each year, distributed internationally. Special emphasis is given to original research in history, the arts, natural history and social and health sciences, while more general books include the Local Guides ecotourism series. The Press also publishes Landfall, New Zealand’s leading literary and arts journal, and some new writing.

Established in 2000, Oratia Media is an independent publisher and consultancy firm. Under its Libro International imprint, it publishes a select list in history, Māori topics, business, non-fiction, children’s and educational books. Oratia Media works with associates in New Zealand and inter­nationally to provide full publishing, packaging and writing services to other publishers and organisations, as well as export marketing and representation. It is also active in the ebook and digital publishing spheres.

Established in 1972, the Book Council runs a range of programmes that bring writers and readers together across New Zealand. Through its Writers in Schools programmes, over 50,000 students each year meet writers and hear them speak about their work. The Book Council’s web­site is New Zealand’s largest and most comprehensive site for the literary arts and provides updated biographies of hundreds of New Zealand writers. The Book Council is a not-for-profit organisation funded by its member­ship base, Creative New Zealand, and other grants and donations. 

A division of a multinational book publisher and distributor, HarperCollins Publishers (NZ) Ltd also generates its own exciting and successful New Zealand publishing programme. In addition to handling HarperCollins’ internationally published titles, this large, well-established company represents a number of other local and overseas publishers.

Exisle Publishing is an independent publisher of non-fiction, covering a broad range of subject areas including self-help, sports, equestrian, maritime, biography, popular history and photography. Exisle publishes from offices in Australia and New Zealand and sells co-editions and translations around the world.
